London, Thanasis Gavos
The High Court in London has ruled that the request of the American authorities for the extradition of Julian Assange can be fulfilled, overturning a previous decision of a British court.
The Supreme Court has ruled that US assurances about the treatment of the Wikileaks founder before and after the trial will be sufficient if he is charged with espionage following the release of secret documents in 2010 and 2011 relating to the wars in Afghanistan and in Iraq.
In January, a British court rejected the US request on the basis of concerns about his mental health and the possibility of suicide in case of extradition.
The justification of the US appeal means that the case is returned to the court of first instance to examine all the new data. In the event of a rejection of the extradition request, the case will most likely be referred to the British Supreme Court for a final outcome.
Mr Assange, 50, has been in prison in Britain since 2019 for violating bail after spending seven years in Ecuador’s embassy building in London, where he has been extradited to Sweden on rape charges, which have now been dropped.
