ELSTAT: Inflation jump to 4.8% – 180% increase in gas price

Inflation rose sharply in November 2021, reaching 4.8% compared to 3.4% in October and down 2.1% in November 2020.

Within a year, the prices of energy products caught fire, as price increases were recorded in: Natural gas (180.9%), Heating oil (45.2%), Electricity (37.8%) and Fuels (24, 9%). At the same time, there were price increases in many goods that make up the so-called “housewife’s basket”, such as, among others, in: Lamb-goat (21.3%), Olive oil (18.5%), Other edible oils (16.7 %), Potatoes (11.9%), Fresh fish (9.8%), Bread (4.3%), Coffee (3.9%) and Cheeses (3.5%).

While, between November and October this year the main price increases were related to: Natural gas (31.7%), Electricity (15.9%), Fresh fruit (3.5%), Potatoes (3.2%), Lamb and goat (2.9%), Pork (2.1%), Other bakery and confectionery products (2.1%), Cheeses (2.1%), Preserved or processed vegetables (1.7%), Fuels and lubricants (1.6%), New cars (1.3%), Poultry (1.2%), Fresh fish (1.1%) and Beef (0.7%).

According to ELSTAT, the increase in the general consumer price index in November was mainly due to changes in the following groups of goods and services:

1. From the increases of the indicators by:

* 3.5% in the group “Food and non-alcoholic beverages”, due to increase mainly in prices of: bread, other bakery and confectionery products, pasta, beef, poultry, lamb and goat, meat preparations, fresh fish, cheese , olive oil, other edible oils, fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, potatoes, chocolates – chocolate products, coffee.

* 3.9% in the group “Clothing and footwear”, due to price increases in clothing and footwear.

* 17.7% in the “Housing” group, due to an increase mainly in prices for: housing, electricity, gas, heating oil.

* 2.3% in the group “Durable goods – Household items and services”, mainly due to price increases in: furniture and decorative items, glass-tableware and household utensils, household goods, household services.

* 9.3% in the “Transport” group, due mainly to price increases in: fuels and lubricants, new cars, airline tickets.

* 0.9% in the “Education” group, due mainly to an increase in prices for secondary education.

* 1.3% in the group “Hotels-Cafes-Restaurants”, due mainly to increase in prices in: restaurants-patisseries-cafes, hotels-motels-inns.

2. From the reductions of the indicators by:

* 0.1% in the group “Alcoholic beverages and tobacco”, due mainly to a reduction in wine prices.

* 0.1% in the “Health” group, due mainly to a reduction in prices for medicinal products. Part of this decrease was offset by the increase mainly in prices for dental services.

* 2.7% in the “Communications” group, due mainly to reduction of prices in: telephone services, mobile telephone equipment.

* 0.3% in the group “Leisure-cultural activities”, due mainly to a reduction in prices for durable leisure goods.

* 0.7% in the group “Other goods and services”, due mainly to reduction of prices in: other types of personal care, vehicle insurance premiums.

At the same time, the general index increased by 0.5% in November 2021 compared to October 2021, compared to a decrease of 0.9% in the corresponding comparison of the previous year.

In terms of harmonized inflation, it increased by 4% in November this year, from an increase of 2.8% in October and a decrease of 2.1% in November 2020. Between November and October, the harmonized index increased by 0.3%, compared to a decrease. 0.8% recorded in the corresponding comparison of the previous year.
