Saudi Arabia: 43 camels out of beauty contest because they underwent Botox

“Nip and tuck” on camels in Saudi Arabia … A popular camel beauty contest in the country was tarnished when it was revealed that 43 of the contestants were excluded from the contest because they had undergone Botox and other cosmetic surgeries.

The King Abdulaziz Camel Festival is an annual Bedouin event held in the desert northeast of Riyadh that attracts feeders from all Gulf countries with rich cash prizes of up to $ 66 million.

In recent years, organizers have uncovered cosmetic surgery, an illegal practice that is widely practiced amid intense competition and despite severe penalties. For example, a fine for Botox or hormone injections can be up to 100,000 riyals ($ 27,000) per camel, while knitting, cutting the tail or ψ dyeing a camel’s hair carries a fine of 30,000 riyals ($ 8,000).

The operations are performed in an effort to make the animals’ lips look more drooping and their humps more well-shaped.

“Forty-three camels were excluded when it was revealed that they had undergone surgery,” the official Saudi Press Agency reported yesterday.
This was the largest number of exclusions since the competition started six years ago.

In 2018, more than 24 camels were excluded.

The scandal was uncovered when the camels underwent tests, such as x-rays, to determine any cosmetic procedures such as Botox, according to the agency.

According to an official in the French Agency, the aesthetic operations on the camels are considered animal abuse.

“Those who break the rule face high fines and are barred from participating in future competitions,” he added.
