Lord Mountbatten accused of sexually abusing 11-year-old in ‘hell boarding school’

Lord Mountbatten, uncle of Prince Philip and second cousin of King George VI, was assassinated in 1977 when the IRA planted a bomb on his yacht.

One of the most prominent members of the House of Windsor, Mr Lord Mountbatten, accused of sexually abusing an 11-year-old boy in a “hell boarding school” 43 years after he was killed by the Irish Republican Army (IRA).

Arthur Smythe, who waived his right to anonymity in similar cases, claims he was abused twice by Mountbatten in 1977 at the notorious Kincora boarding school in Northern Ireland.

Lord Mountbatten, uncle of Prince Philip and second cousin of King George VI, was assassinated in 1977 when IRA planted a bomb on his yacht.

Now, for the first time, there will be a hearing at the High Court in Belfast into the abuse at the boarding school, which has faced a spate of allegations of child abuse.
Five years ago, a public inquiry found that at least 39 boys had been abused at Kincora – four decades after three members of staff were jailed for abusing 11 victims there. The inquiry criticized authorities for failing to act to protect children despite complaints at the time.

Smythe, now 56, claims he was first abused by boarding school staff member William McGrath – who became known as “the beast of Kinkora” – shortly after arriving at the lodge.

He claims Mr McGrath introduced him to a “high society” stranger in August 1977 who molested him twice.

Smythe told Sunday Life: “McGrath was saying, ‘you’re going to meet a special friend.’ And I said, ‘Oh, really?’ And that’s when he took me to that room – downstairs there was a big room, with a big desk and there was a shower.

“Name [του ξένου] never mentioned the room. He would make me shower and then McGrath would come down and pick me up.”

The 56-year-old claims he only realized who his abuser was in 1979 because of the publicity the murder of Lord Mountbatten got.

Smith, who now lives in Australia, added: “You don’t forget who abused you. Trust me. You ‘block’ it but you don’t forget it. I pushed it away for years. I was ashamed of what happened but now I want to find inner peace.”
