EU foreign ministers meeting today on Monday approved the launch of a two-year training mission, which will involve various EU forces providing basic and specialized instruction to Ukrainian soldiers. The training will take place in Poland and Germany. Officials hope the mission, which is expected to cost 107 million euros, it will be implemented by mid-November.

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said it was “not just a training mission” but a “clear demonstration that the EU will stand by Ukraine for as long as it takes”.

The ministers approved also an additional 500 million euros to provide weapons and other military equipment for Ukraine, which means that the EU has now committed €3.1 billion for the Ukrainian army from the start of the Russian invasion last February until today.

Several EU and NATO countries already train Ukraine’s military, but Brussels officials believe the EU mission can provide additional value.
