Intense political confrontation in France on the occasion of the case that has shocked public opinion

The first evidence of the character of Dhabia B., of the 24-year-old Algerian accused of murdering a 12-year-old girl whose body was found in a suitcase last week, suggest he lived a chaotic life marked by marginalization and violence.

Dabia has already been remanded in custody. On Monday, she was prosecuted for “homicide and rape, with torture and brutality, against a minor under 15 years of age”.

The death of 12-year-old Lola caused emotion and controversy in France.

The child’s parents were received today by President Emmanuel Macron who expressed his support for them.

Dabia B. was born in Algeria in the spring of 1998 and arrived in France in 2016 legally, with a student residence permit. Two years later, in 2018, she was a victim of domestic violence – the police learned from this incident.

On August 21 this year, she was arrested at an airport in France because she no longer had a residence permit and was told she had to leave the country. As she had no criminal record, she was released and given 30 days to return to Algeria.

According to her own statements, Dhabia had a professional qualification in catering, but was homeless, unemployed and had no income at the time of her arrest. She lived with an acquaintance in the Paris area and was sometimes hosted by her 26-year-old sister, who lives in the same building as Lola’s family.

It was the sister who revealed Dhabia’s chaotic life to the police.

She was “difficult to integrate”, which is also confirmed by people close to her, while last month she was “waking up in the middle of the night” and “talking unintelligibly”according to the 26-year-old.

During the preliminary investigation, he made “conflicting statements”, sometimes admitting and sometimes denying any involvement in Lola’s death, Paris prosecutor Laure Bequio explained. After first presenting the chain of events leading up to Lola’s death and her wandering around with the suitcase in which she had put the lifeless body, Dambia B. recanted. He claimed that he was “telling a dream and not reality” and that he was “defending himself as he was attacked with a knife” and that he was “fighting a ghost”. He assured that “it is impossible to kill a child”.

But he showed “no compassion for the victim”, according to the prosecutor. “I’m neither cold nor hot” she replied to the police who showed her photos of the body. “I was also raped and I saw my parents die in front of my eyes,” she said.

In the hearing that took place yesterday behind closed doors, before the judge who would decide whether she should be remanded in custody, the young woman appeared calm and indifferent. He is said to be suffering from psychological problems, but in the first examination it was found that he did not have any immediate problem and he was able to be questioned. Moreover, she is not known in the psychiatric hospitals of the Paris area.

During the time she will remain in custody, one or more psychiatric evaluations will be carried out to determine if she really faces a problem.

The killing of the 12-year-old was the start of a new political confrontation: far-right leader Marine Le Pen told parliament that “the suspect of this barbaric act should not be on our soil”. Prime Minister Elizabeth Bourne recalled her to class, asking her to respect “the family’s pain” and let the police and justice do their job.

Justice Minister Eric Dupont-Moretti, in response to a right-wing MP’s question, said it was “shameful” to use the coffin of a 12-year-old child as a stepping stone.
