Mali: Three children killed due to the detonation of an improvised explosive device

Three children died on Tuesday when an improvised explosive device detonated in central Mali, adding to the endless list of victims of such weapons, which have killed nearly two dozen people in a week and hundreds since the start of the year, a medical source said.

A health center in Badiagara confirmed to an AFP correspondent the death of the three children, which had been reported earlier by local media. No details have been given on the circumstances of the tragedy.

This is the third murder incident of this kind in less than a week.

Eleven civilians were killed and dozens injured on Thursday, October 13, in Mopti district (central), when a vehicle they were traveling in fell into an improvised explosive device.

On Monday, the convoy of the UN mission (MINUSMA) was hit by an improvised explosive device during a demining team patrol in the north, killing four peacekeepers, members of the Chadian armed forces, and injuring two others. .

Mines and improvised explosive devices are the jihadists’ weapons of choice. They explode on contact if approached, or are detonated remotely.

Central Mali is one of the centers of activity of jihadist organizations that pledge allegiance to either Al-Qaeda or the Islamic State (IS) and appeared in the north of the country in 2012. Their actions have since spread to the country and to neighboring states (Burkina Faso, Niger). .

MINUSMA, in its quarterly report to the Security Council that met yesterday Tuesday in New York, considered that the “security conditions (remain) very worrying” in Mali, especially in the central part of the country.

But not only. At least seven members of an armed pro-regime group were killed yesterday near Gao (north), when gunmen attacked their positions from which they controlled access to the southern part of the city, Omar Maiga, an official of this group, the so-called Ganda Izo.

A police spokesman confirmed the attack and the death of members of the paramilitary group. He added that the army is sending reinforcements.
