Russia’s dependence on Iranian-made drones on the attacks on Ukrainian targets demonstrates Moscow’s “bankruptcy” at the military and political level, the Ukrainian president claimed yesterday Volodymyr Zelensky. The use of Iranian weapons amounts to an admission of failure by Moscow after decades of funding the Soviet and post-Soviet defense industry, he added.

According to Kyiv, the recent Russian attacks on infrastructure in Ukraine were launched by Iranian-made Shahed-136 kamikaze drones.

Iran denies supplying Russia with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), something the White House says it is confident of. The Kremlin said yesterday that it had no information about the use of Iranian-made drones in attacks in Ukraine.

“Let’s keep in mind that the very fact that Russia asked Iran for help is an admission by the Kremlin that it is bankrupt” militarily and politically, Zelensky claimed in a video message, explaining: “For decades, they spent billions of dollars on their defense industry. And finally, they bowed to Tehran in order to secure joint drones and missiles.”

Volodymyr Zelensky, who has stated that because of the recent attacks on30% of Ukraine’s power plants were shut downalso argued that the use of Iranian-made drones could create hope and illusions for Russia’s leaders, but ultimately will not help substantially.

“It will simply show the world once again that Russia is headed for defeat and is trying to drag one more of its accomplices into this atrocity,” the Ukrainian president said.
