Impressive find: Medieval dugout recovered from famous Lake Bled in Slovenia

Lake Bled with the country’s only islet and the Church of the Assumption on the islet, is a fairytale natural landscape and is the country’s most touristic attraction.

From this lake, a team of divers recovered a dugout from the early medieval period last week. The impressive find, dating back 1,200 years, shows that boats were used in the lake and that its island was already visitable from the first phase of Slavic settlement. of the area.

The five-meter-long vessel was discovered in 2015 at a depth of 11 meters. Archaeologists report that it was constructed from a single Scots pine, cut down in the late 8th or early 9th century AD. during the first phase of creation of Slavic settlements in today’s northwestern Slovenia.

The vessel will now be maintained and later exhibited in the new archaeological museum of the municipality of Bled.

The discovery could indicate that the island in the lake was already functioning as a pre-Christian place of worship, while the possibility of a settlement cannot be ruled out.

The Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of Slovenia (ZVKDS) meanwhile, according to the Slovenian news agency STA, hopes that further research will shed light on the origin of scattered human bones found at the bottom of the lake in the immediate vicinity of dugout.
