Britain: Truss government wins parliamentary vote on fracking method

Liz Truss’s government won the vote by 326 votes to 230 – 40 Conservative MPs did not take part in the vote

Voted down on House of Commons Labour’s proposal to ban the controversial method of hydraulic fracturing (fracking) for the extraction of shale gas, in a vote that had taken the form of a vote of confidence in the British government.

Liz Truss’ government won the vote by 326 votes to 230, but it was not unscathed. As the BBC points out, 40 Conservative MPs did not participate in the vote.

All this while Prime Minister Truss is struggling to stay in power despite the fierce criticism she receives even from within the ruling Conservative Party.

Earlier it emerged that Conservative MP Wendy Morton, who was responsible for party discipline, had tendered her resignation, hours after Home Secretary Suella Braverman left.

Braverman’s resignation, citing a “breach of security rules” regarding the sharing of sensitive government information, is the second resignation of a Trump minister in a matter of days. Both were replaced by officials who had not backed Liz Truss’s candidacy in the internal party vote to succeed Boris Johnson as Tory leader. Jeremy Hunt replaced Kwazi Kwarteng at the Treasury, while Grant Shapps succeeded Suella Braverman at the Home Office.
