St. Department: The US opposes Turkey-Russia cooperation on natural gas

According to US State Department Deputy Spokesman Vedant Patel, the US is urging its allies to take steps to diversify their energy sources and reduce energy dependence on Russia.

The opposition of the United States to the agreement announced by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for the creation of a natural gas hub in cooperation with Russia is expressed by the State Department.

As the deputy spokesman for the US State Department, Vedant Patel, emphasized, “(as the US) we urge our allies to take steps to diversify their energy sources and reduce energy dependence on Russia. In the case of Turkey in particular, we are working closely with it to help its own efforts to strengthen long-term energy security.”

Continuing, the State Department representative referred to Turkey and the issue of the imposition of sanctions. “We have worked closely with our allies and partners to impose a severe and unprecedented cost on Russia, including through sanctions, export controls and visa restrictions. We have explained to Turkey and all our allies and partners that no one should turn into a safe haven for illicit Russian assets or transactions, and we will continue to do so,” Vedant Patel noted.

US Undersecretary of the Treasury Elizabeth Rosenberg, who is in charge of matters related to financial crimes and the financing of terrorism, visited Turkey this week. During her three-day stay in the neighboring country, Mrs. Rosenberg held contacts with her counterparts from the Turkish Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. According to the statement from the American side, “these meetings confirmed the importance of close cooperation between the United States and Turkey to address the risks posed by sanctions evasion and other illicit financial activities.”
