The company warns of long-term power outages due to the destruction of many energy infrastructures by Russian bombing
The managing company of Ukraine’s electricity grid, Ukrenergo, invited citizens “to charge everything” until 07:00 this morning as power outages are expected due to the destruction of many energy infrastructures by Russian bombing.
Yesterday, Wednesday, Russian missiles struck again power plants in the context of a wave of blows unleashed by Moscow after October 10.
Ukrenergo said power outages of up to four hours at a time could affect the entire country today and called on people to stock up on water and ensure they have “warm socks and blankets and hugs for their family and friends”.
He also emphasized that mobile phones, batteries, flashlights and external battery chargers (power banks) should be charged.
For his part, Kyiv Mayor Vitaly Klitschko called on citizens to avoid using microwave ovens, air conditioners, electric kettles or radiators from 07:00 to 23:00.
As Russian shelling continues across Ukraine, including the capital, Kyiv has accused Moscow of preparing a “mass displacement” of residents of areas it recently annexed and the recruitment of Ukrainian citizens into the Russian army.
In his speech last Wednesday night, Zelensky pointed out that Ukrainian forces shot down 21 Iranian drones yesterday, ten of which were heading towards Kyiv. “Unfortunately there were strikes and new damage to critical infrastructure,” he added.
“We are preparing for all possible scenarios as winter approaches,” Zelenskiy assured. “We expect Russian terror to be directed against energy infrastructure until, with the help of our partners, we are able to destroy 100 percent of the missiles and drones,” he added.
The EU is preparing sanctions against Iran, which it accuses of providing Russia with drones to target Ukraine. And the UN Security Council met for two hours behind closed doors yesterday on the issue.
“Relentless and deliberate attacks”
US diplomacy has “identified in recent months ample evidence that Russia is using Iranian drones for relentless and deliberate attacks against the Ukrainian people and vital political infrastructure,” a State Department spokesman said before the start of the Security Council meeting.
Russia’s deputy ambassador to the UN, Dmitry Polyansky, and Iran’s ambassador, Amir Said Iravani, denied the allegations.
Russian diplomacy spoke of “baseless accusations, conspiracy theories”, while adding that “no evidence was presented to the Security Council”, underlining that the drones used in Ukraine “are manufactured in Russia”.
Resistance “to the death”
In southern Ukraine, the Russian administration of the Kherson province confirmed yesterday that the evacuation of citizens has begun. “50,000 to 60,000” are expected to move in a few days.
The city of Kherson, captured by Russia in the spring, will be evacuated due to the advance of Ukrainian forces, Moscow-appointed head of local authorities Vladimir Saldo said, vowing that Russian soldiers would resist “to the death”.
However, the secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, Oleksiy Danilov, spoke of “preparation for mass displacement of the Ukrainian population” to Russia “in order to alter the ethnic composition of the occupied territories.”
“A crime which must be condemned by the UN and which has already been committed in Crimea”, which Moscow annexed in 2014, he added.
A total of “about five million residents” of the four Ukrainian regions annexed by Russia in September are currently on Russian soil, where they have “taken refuge”, countered the secretary general of Russia’s Security Council, Nikolai Patrushev.
Zelensky also warned the residents of the annexed regions – Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhia – about a campaign of forced recruitment by the Russian army.
“Try to leave the occupied territories. And if you can’t do it and you are in the Russian military units, try at the first opportunity to lay down your arms and go to the Ukrainian positions,” he called on them.
