On Friday, October 28, it is expected to complete the internal party process to elect the new leader of the Conservative Party and the new Prime Minister of Britain, said Sir Graham Brady, head of the relevant party body, the 1922 Commission.
In his brief statements, Sir Graham assured that the new leader will be in place before October 31, when the critical medium-term budget plan of the British government is expected to be presented.
He added that if there is more than one candidate, he expects that they will be put to the judgment of the party’s base in addition to the judgment of MPs, as stipulated in the Conservative constitution.
Sir Graham said more details would be released “soon”.
Chancellor of the Exchequer Jeremy Hunt has ruled himself out of the succession race. The names that are considered more or less likely to claim the leadership are those of Rishi Sunak, Penny Mordant, Suella Braverman, Kemi Beidenock, Ben Wallace, while polls show that Boris Johnson remains extremely popular among Tory members.
At the same time, with their statements, each of the leaders of the major opposition parties requested the announcement of early elections.
The main opposition Labor leader Sir Keir Starmer spoke of “chaos” and a “soap opera”, which is hurting the reputation of the UK and the pocketbook. “Citizens have the right to have a say and that’s why elections should be held,” he said.
