Fire in a hotel in Germany that hosted refugees from Ukraine

by

There were no injuries – the police believe it was due to arson

A fire has almost completely destroyed a hotel hosting Ukrainian refugees in northeastern Germany, luckily with no casualties, while police are investigating the arson scenario.

When the fire broke out, on Wednesday night, there were 14 guests and three employees at the Schaefereck Hotel, as the Rostock police announced today, pointing out that no one was injured and that “arson is suspected”.

The hotel, located in the community of Gross Strömkendorf, near the Baltic coast, served as accommodation for refugees, mainly Ukrainians who had fled their homeland to escape the Russian invasion.

“If it is confirmed that this is arson, then we will be talking about a hate crime,” said Interior Minister Nancy Feser, assuring that in such a case the perpetrators will be identified and held accountable.

According to German media, a swastika had been painted on the door of the hotel.

“I’m shocked at what appears to have happened here,” said police inspector Michael Peters.

“Any attack against refugees constitutes an attack against our values,” he stressed.

The fire in the run-down eastern state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern was near the site where in August 1992 hundreds of far-right extremists launched Germany’s worst attacks on migrants.
