Summit – Brussels: Steps of rapprochement Emmanuel Macron and Olaf Solz

by

Although coming to the European Council expressed positions that seemed diametrically opposed, the two leaders last night had a half-hour four-on-four, without any of their advisers present, before meeting again with the remaining 25 leaders.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron showed a willingness to ease tensions overnight Thursday into Friday in Brussels after tensions between Berlin and Paris came to light in Brussels.

“The cooperation between Germany and France, as well as between the chancellor and the president, is intensive and fruitful,” assured the head of the German government after the first day of the summit focused on drawing up a road map to reduce energy prices.

Asked about the friction with the French head of state, who multiplied his innuendoes yesterday Thursday and warned against the possible isolation of Germany in the EU, Mr. Scholz recalled that the two talk “constantly” and that they have already set a new date on Wednesday in Paris.

However, next week’s meeting simply replaces the joint Franco-German cabinet, which was postponed due to disagreements over several files.

The chancellor assured that he “in no way” felt isolated from his partners in the long and arduous talks on the energy issue.

Although coming to the European Council expressed positions that seemed diametrically opposed, the two leaders last night had a half-hour four-on-four, without any of their advisers present, before meeting again with the remaining 25 leaders.

This meeting “allowed many things to be clarified” to “secure Germany’s agreement” on the final text of the conclusions, Mr Macron told the press, judging that France had played its “role” by promoting “unity” in the EU .

“We don’t always have the same positions”, however “this is normal”, he added, seeming to try to downplay the disagreements that had been highlighted by the French side before and during the Summit.
