Rules paralyzing purchases, sales and transfers of weapons in Canada will take effect from this Friday (21), the country’s Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, announced in a press release. The text states that the measure still blocks the importation of new revolvers.
The action had been announced in May, a week after a shooting massacre left 21 dead at a school in Texas, in the neighboring country, the United States.
The shutdown precedes a package of laws that aims to implement the country’s biggest gun control in four decades, part of a “broad government plan to respond to gun violence,” according to the statement released. According to the government, it aims to “keep Canadians safe” while the legislation is debated in Parliament.
