“The North American economy is making choices for the sake of attractiveness, which I respect, but they are creating double standards,” Emmanuel Macron said, according to Bloomberg
US trade and energy policies for creating “double standards” with Europe have been criticized by French President Emmanuel Macron as resentment grows over the continent’s economic toll from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
“The North American economy is making choices for the sake of attractiveness, which I respect, but they are creating a double standard” with lower energy prices at home, while selling natural gas to Europe at record pricesMacron said at a press conference in Brussels after a meeting of European Union leaders as reported by Bloomberg.
“Furthermore, they allow state aid of up to 80% in some sectors, while it is prohibited here – you have a double standard,” he added. “This is due to the honesty of transatlantic trade,” he stressed.
The EU is challenging the US stimulus package known as the Deflation Act, which provides subsidies for electric cars made in North America and provides what European officials say is unfair support for the green economy.
Macron, 44, will highlight these points when he visits Washington in early December. Relations between the two countries have been rocked after Australia ditched a major deal to buy French submarines in favor of nuclear-powered submarines from the US.
