Korean ships violate international sanctions on Canada

by

Canada has identified at least 24 ship-to-ship transports and more than 100 “ships of interest” that could violate sanctions against North Korea by mid-October, according to the Department of Defense on Wednesday.

Canadian Navy and Air Force – including the HMCS Winnipeg frigate and a CP-140 Aurora reconnaissance aircraft – are currently in the Indo-Pacific Ocean as part of the United Nations Coordinating Cell (ECC) for the suppression of other carbon-based products, in sanctions against North Korea.

“Canada’s participation in this multinational initiative is a testament to international solidarity in supporting peace and security on the Korean Peninsula,” a Pentagon spokesman told NK News, referring to the US-led operation.

The ministry said HMCS Winnipeg and its crew of nearly 260 people have already traveled more than 30,000 nautical miles since its voyage began in October. During this period, a total of 23 “vessels of interest” were identified, although it is not clear whether these vessels were also involved in ship-to-ship transports or some other form of illegal activity.

Meanwhile, 17 flights have been conducted from the air for a total of 175 hours of surveillance, according to the ministry. During this period, his crew located 118 ships of interest and 24 possible ship-to-ship transfers.
