Unimaginable tragedy in Indonesia: They gave syrup with toxic substances – 133 children died of acute kidney failure

“We have recorded 241 cases in 22 provinces,” Budi Minister Gunadi Sadikin said.

The children who died due to acute renal failure in Indonesia is 133, announced today the Ministry of Health of the country, which attributes the deaths to toxic substances contained in syrups.

Indonesian authorities have launched an investigation and on Wednesday banned the sale and prescription of syrups, citing a rise in the number of children who developed kidney failure.

“We have recorded 241 cases in 22 provinces” and of those children, 133 died, Minister Budi Gunadi Sandikin said at a press conference. Traces of toxic chemicals were found in children hospitalized with acute kidney failure. “Seven of the 11 children had the following harmful substances: ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol methyl butyl ether,” the minister added.

The World Health Organization announced in early October that “unacceptable levels” of diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol had been found in four cough syrups made in India believed to be responsible for the deaths of 70 children in The Gambia. Indonesian authorities found traces of similar substances in 102 syrups taken from the homes of sick children.

The condition of some children improved after they were given an antidote imported from Singapore. Most children range in age from a few months to five years.
