According to British media, the meeting took place last night. The Sunday Telegraph newspaper reports that the two potential rivals in the succession race have discussed running “jointly” to avoid a Tory “civil war”.
Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his former finance minister Rishi Sunak, potential rivals in the race for Number 10 Downing Street, met on Saturday night, according to media reports including the BBC and of the Sunday Times.
Mr Johnson and Mr Sunak, whose resignation ultimately led to that of the former prime minister, have yet to formally jump into the Tories’ blitzkrieg for a new party leader, following the resignation of Liz Truss, who he was only 44 days in power.
Mr Johnson returned to London yesterday morning after his holiday in the Caribbean, a development that intensified the scenario for his possible candidacy. He met Mr Sunak to discuss the race to succeed Ms Truss, according to media reports including the BBC.
As reported by the usually well-informed Sunday Telegraph, they discussed the possibility of a “joint” candidacy to avoid the possibility of a Tory “civil war”.
In addition to Mr. Sunak and Johnson, the only other name that has been heard so far is that of Penny Mordant, who formalized her intention to contest the party leadership and prime ministership on Friday.
James Dundridge, an ally of Mr Johnson’s in the House of Commons, said on Friday that the former prime minister had told him “we will do it, I’m ready”.
Leaving parliament on July 20, Boris Johnson had thrown the phrase “Hasta la vista, baby!”.
The next prime minister will be the fifth since 2016, when the UK voted to leave the EU.
