Nelson de Sá: Abroad, Bolsonaro’s effort to detach himself from Jefferson does not work

by

In the headline of the American agency AP, reproduced by the Washington Post (below) and by conservatives such as the Washington Examiner, “Brazilian politician allied with Bolsonaro refuses arrest and injures police”.

“The events were impressive even for Brazilians, increasingly accustomed to far-right politicians and activists criticizing the Supreme Court, and come a few days before Brazilians go to the polls”, describes the text.

In the headlines of the German Der Spiegel, “Bolsonaro’s ex-deputy attacks police with grenades”; from the Spanish El País, “Bolsonaro’s allied politician entrenches himself and wounds two policemen to avoid being arrested”; and from the French network TF1, “Ex-deputy close to Bolsonaro wounds two police officers with grenades”.

In the dispatch from the Argentine news agency Telám, reproduced by La Nación and others, “Bolsonaro’s ally was entrenched, wounded police and surrendered.” Also in the French AFP, “Bolsonaro’s ally refuses arrest and attacks police with gun and grenades”.

Others, such as the British BBC and The Guardian, highlighted in the opening of their reports that Roberto Jefferson is “an ally of the far-right president Jair Bolsonaro”.

OTHER SIDE

The “impressive” news ran over the American right’s pro-Bolsonaro efforts over the weekend, in a column by Mary O’Grady in the Wall Street Journal, against Alexandre de Moraes, and an interview by the Brazilian president with Ben Shapiro in the Daily Wire.
