Receipts from tourism almost doubled in the eight months of January-August

The increase reached 92.1% according to the data of the Bank of Greece

Tourist receipts showed an increase of 92.1% in the eight months of January – August 2022 by touching them 12.75 billion euros.

This development, according to the data of the Bank of Greece, is due to the increase in collections from residents of the EU-27 countries by 64.8%, which amounted to 7.44 billion euros, as well as collections from residents of countries outside the EU-27 by 147.7%, which amounted to 5.05 billion euros.

In more detail, collections from residents of the euro zone countries amounted to 5.0 billion euros, increased by 63.3%, while receipts from residents of the EU-27 countries outside the euro zone amounted to 1,571 billion euros, showing an increase of 70.6%.

Particularly, receipts from Germany increased by 67.6% to €2.23 billion, while receipts from France increased by 37.2% to €369.3 billion. From the countries outside the EU-27, receipts from the United Kingdom rose by 173.1% to €2.28 billion. Receipts from the USA increased by 118.1% to 723.3 million euros, while those from Russia decreased by 63.0% to 20.8 million euros.

The increase in receipts keeps pace with incoming tourist traffic which increased in the eight months by 121.8% and amounted to 19.12 million travelers, compared to 8 million travelers in the corresponding period of 2021.

In particular, travel traffic through airports increased by 120.3%, while that through road stations by 139.6%. During the period under review, travel traffic from EU-27 countries amounted to 11.92 million travelers, showing an increase of 92.4% compared to the corresponding period in 2021, while travel traffic from non-EU countries -27 increased by 197.1% and amounted to 7.19 million travelers. Travel traffic from euro area countries increased by 88.9%, while travel traffic from EU-27 countries outside the euro area increased by 100.0%.

In particular, travel traffic from Germany increased by 88.6% and reached 2.89 million travelers, while that from France increased by 69.7% and reached 1.31 million travelers. In relation to countries outside the EU 27, travel traffic from the United Kingdom increased by 316.0% to 3.0 million travelers and that from the USA by 207.5% to 647.2 thousand travelers. Finally, travel traffic from Russia decreased by 50.3% and amounted to 26.9 thousand travelers.

Comparison with 2019, the last year before the pandemic

Compared to August 2019, in August 2022 travel receipts decreased by 1.5%, average spend per trip increased by 14.0% and inbound travel traffic decreased by 13.3%.

Compared to the January-August 2019 period, in the January-August 2022 period travel receipts decreased by 3.6% and inbound travel traffic by 12.4%, while the average spend per trip increased by 10.6%.
