At least 13 people died in a fire that broke out on a ship off the island of Timor today, Indonesian authorities said.
The fire broke out on the main deck of the KM Express Cantika 77, which was plying between Kupang and Kalambahi.

Floating ships and fishermen rushed to help. Most of those on board donned life jackets and jumped overboard, some swam to shore.

For his part, a representative of the rescue services spoke of 14 dead and 226 survivors.
Maritime accidents are common in Indonesia, which has more than 17,000 islands and a population that relies on sea transport.
In 2018, around 160 people died in a ferry wreck in Sumatra.
