The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the terrorist attack that killed at least 13 people at a Shia temple in the city of Shiraz, in southern Iran. The terrorist group made the statement through a note posted on its Telegram channel.

In the late afternoon of this Wednesday (26), by local time, a man shot at the faithful in the temple of Shah Cheragh. According to officials in the Persian country, the attackers were foreigners and Sunnis.

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi said the attack would not go unanswered.

“History shows that Iran’s enemies, failing to create a division in the nation’s unity, exact revenge through violence and terror. This evil will will not go unanswered, and security and law enforcement agencies will teach a lesson to those responsible for the attack,” he said.

The terrorist attack, a rare occurrence in Iran, came amid a period of protests in the country. For more than a month, there have been demonstrations in the country after the death of Masha Amini, 22, who died on September 16 after being taken away by the moral police for allegedly not wearing the hijab (a veil that covers the hair, mandatory for Iranian women). in the correct way.

State repression of the protests has already left around 200 dead. Also on Wednesday, Iranian police shot at protesters at the memorial erected in memory of Amini, in Saqez, Kurdistan, the young woman’s hometown.

According to news agencies, thousands of people gathered at the young woman’s memorial to pay their respects – in Iran, the traditional period of mourning lasts exactly 40 days, exactly the time that has elapsed since the young woman’s death.

Before, however, according to activists, authorities had warned the girl’s parents not to organize ceremonies and threatened to arrest the couple’s son if the protests took place – the regime denies it.
