UN: Russia denounces US involvement in a biological weapons development program in Ukraine

The US ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, spoke of the Kremlin’s “invention”. “We all know that this claim is clearly a fabrication, put forward without a trace of proof,” he said.

Russia has asked the UN Security Council to conduct an international investigation into US “involvement” in the alleged development of biological weapons in Ukraine, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced today.

“Russia had no choice but to submit a complaint to the president of the UN Security Council, requesting an international investigation” into “US activities related to biological weapons on the territory of Ukraine,” the relevant statement said, clarifying that the complaint was accompanied by a draft resolution.

The US ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, spoke of the Kremlin’s “invention”. “We all know that this allegation is clearly a fabrication, put forth without a shred of evidence,” he said, adding, “But I must take this opportunity to make it clear: Ukraine does not have a biological weapons program … The United States does not have a biological weapons program.” .

After the Russian invasion of Ukraine began in late February, Moscow accused Washington of funding a biological weapons development program in Ukraine, claiming it had found evidence of it in Ukrainian laboratories.

According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, the goal of the program was “to create a mechanism for the covert spread of deadly pathogens.”

Moscow has repeatedly made such accusations at UN Security Council meetings.

For their part, both Washington and Kyiv have denied the existence of laboratories for the development of biological weapons in Ukraine.

In 2018, Russia accused the US of conducting secret biological experiments in a laboratory in Georgia, a former Soviet republic that – like Ukraine – aspires to join NATO and the European Union.
