Italy: “Call Meloni prime minister,” says the government’s general secretary

by

This recommendation caused surprise and mixed comments in the Italian media, while some analysts speculated that it could be “fake news”.

In his written directive to the various ministries, the new general secretary of the presidency of the Italian government, Carlo Deodato, underlined that in official documents Giorgia Meloni should, from now on, be called “the main prime minister”.

This recommendation caused surprise and varied comments in the Italian media, while some analysts speculated that it could be “fake news”.

Already in the previous days, however, the Italian Prime Minister’s press office sent announcements in which reference was made to “Prime Minister Meloni”.

It is noted that the Italian public television Rai journalists’ union, in a statement, made it clear that each journalist should, with absolute freedom, continue to choose whether to refer to Meloni as “the prime minister” or “the prime minister” of Italy.

Finally, Deodato clarified that Meloni’s wish is to be called: “the Italian Prime Minister” and not, as protocol would have it, “the Mr. Italian Prime Minister”.
