“We underline the urgent need to do so to contribute to food security around the world and to alleviate the suffering of billions of people caused by the global crisis related to the rising cost of living,” said the UN Secretary-General’s spokesman. .

The United Nations urged Kyiv and Moscow on Friday to renew an agreement that allowed for the resumption of grain exports from Ukraine’s Black Sea ports, stressing that it is essential for global food security. At the same time, he called for the full implementation of the relevant agreement that ensures that grain and fertilizers from Russia will also be channeled to the world market.

“We underline the urgent need to do so in order to contribute to food security around the world and alleviate the suffering caused to billions of people by the global crisis related to the rising cost of living,” said Stéphane Dujarric, spokesman for the general secretary of the UN.

Under the July 22 agreement, Ukraine was able to resume grain and fertilizer exports, which had been halted following the February 24 Russian invasion. The agreement was initially valid for 120 days.

The UN is working to extend the agreement for up to a year and streamline the process of joint ship inspections by UN officials, Turkey, Russia and Ukraine. The United Nations recently pointed out that inspections of more than 150 ships were pending.

Russia has criticized the deal, complaining that its own exports are still being hampered and that not enough Ukrainian grain is reaching countries in need. Moscow could block the extension of the export deal beyond November.
