Poland has been planning for years to switch to nuclear power generation for civilian purposes, and the issue of energy security came back to the fore after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
“I think it sends a clear message to Russia that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization is united in diversifying energy supplies and resisting Russian instrumentalization of energy,” commented US Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm.
Warsaw’s decision “sends a clear message to (Russian President) Putin about the strength of the US-Polish alliance,” a senior US administration official said.
The Morawiecki government aspires to have the country’s first nuclear power plant operational in 2033. For the construction of the nuclear power plant, the community of Hocevo, on the shores of the Baltic Sea, has been chosen.
