Peru: Fourteen earthquakes in 18 hours – The strongest had a magnitude of 5.9

by

Peru is located on the so-called “Ring of Fire” in the Pacific Ocean, where seismic activity is intense due to the movement of tectonic plates.

Fourteen earthquakes, the strongest of which was a magnitude 5.9, have shaken southern Peru since yesterday Friday, causing concern among residents, but without reports of casualties or significant material damage, according to the country’s Institute of Geophysics (IGP).

The strongest earthquake – magnitude 5.9 – was recorded at 15:22 (local time – 23:22 Greek time). The epicenter was located in the sea area 111 kilometers southwest of the city of Ica and 400 kilometers south of the capital Lima, while the focal depth was estimated at 26 kilometers, the IGP said.

14 earthquakes in 18 hours

The measurements of the Geophysical Institute of Peru for the upsurge of seismic activity in the region, centered on the sea area 86-111 kilometers southwest of the city of Ica and a focal depth of 10-28 kilometers:

04:11 (local time) – 5.1 magnitude earthquake

04:16 (local time) – 4.6 magnitude earthquake

05:56 (local time) – 4.5 magnitude earthquake

07:19 (local time) – 4.1 magnitude earthquake

09:21 (local time) – Magnitude 5 earthquake

13:52 (local time) – Magnitude 4 earthquake

14:16 (local time) – 4.4 magnitude earthquake

14:19 (local time) – 4.9 magnitude earthquake

15:22 (local time) – Magnitude 5.9 earthquake (strongest yet)

17:48 (local time) – 4.1 magnitude earthquake

17:52 (local time) – 5.6 magnitude earthquake

18:35 (local time) – 5.2 magnitude earthquake

19:09 (local time) – 5.8 magnitude earthquake

19:39 (local time) – 4.5 magnitude earthquake

Peru is located on the so-called “Ring of Fire” in the Pacific Ocean, where seismic activity is intense due to the movement of tectonic plates.

On August 15, 2007, a magnitude 7.9 earthquake shook coastal areas in central Peru, killing 595 people.
