The Russian Defense Ministry, citing “available information”, claimed that a Royal Navy unit was behind the blasts.
Russia’s defense ministry claimed today that “representatives” of a British Royal Navy unit blew up the Nord Stream gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea.
The ministry did not present any evidence for this claim.
“According to available information, representatives of this unit of the British (Royal) Navy participated in the planning, preparation and implementation of a terrorist attack in the Baltic Sea on September 26 this year, blowing them up Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline“, the announcement states.
A few days ago the Kremlin claimed that the Europeans will be surprised when they learn the “truth” for the explosions last month that caused the leaks in the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines, which were built to transport Russian gas to Europe.
Russia has repeatedly asked to be included in the international investigation into these leaks, which occurred as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine rages and against the backdrop of the gas “battle” between Russia and the EU.
Russian President Vladimir Putin called the October 12 leaks an act of “international terrorism” for the benefit of the US, Poland and Ukraine, and Russian diplomacy called on US President Joe Biden to reveal whether his country was responsible for the blasts.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said today that Moscow was working “intensively” to be included in the investigation, which it has accused in the past of being “arranged” to pin the blame on Russia.
“Work is being done through diplomatic channels,” the Russian official told reporters.
“But so far, they are meeting a wall of reluctance to jointly shed light on the truth, which will surely surprise more than one European country if it becomes public,” he said, without elaborating.
“Neither the Germans, nor the Swedes, nor the Danes share information with us,” Peskov said.
Nord Stream gas pipelines have been at the center of geopolitical controversy even before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, with Kyiv and Washington opposing their construction, which they say underscores Europe’s dependence on Russian gas
