The Democratic Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosisaid she was “devastated” and “hurt” after her husband was brutally attacked by an intruder in their California home on Friday.

“Our children, our grandchildren and I are devastated and hurt by the attack that put our Paul’s life at risk,” Nancy Pelosi said in a letter shared through her social media accounts.

“We are grateful for the quick response of the police and first responders, as well as the life-saving medical care he received,” Nancy Pelosi said.

According to San Francisco police, officers found 42-year-old David DePape at the couple’s home just before 2:30 a.m. (local time) fighting with Paul Pelosi and attacking him with a hammer.

“It was not an accident … it was intentional,” says Nancy Pelosi. The attacker “demanded to see me and viciously attacked my husband Paul,” she said.

US media reported that the attacker was shouting “Where’s Nancy?” and threatened Paul Pelosi that he intends to tie him up and await the arrival of his wife.

Speaking to reporters after voting in Delaware for the US midterm elections, the president Biden denounced the political tension in the country and those still questioning the outcome of the presidential election in the wake of former President Donald Trump’s inflammatory statements.

“You can’t condemn violence if you don’t (first) condemn everyone who still claims the election was rigged … all this nonsense that undermines democracy,” the US president stressed.

According to the Wall Street Journal citing police sources, David DePape had adopted far-right positions in his posts on social media.

In recent months, concern has been palpable in the US about attacks on politicians ahead of the November 8 midterm elections. Sensation was caused by the position of Republican Senator Susan Collins, who recently stated “It would not surprise me if a senator or congressman is killed.”
