Uproar over the appointment of ‘Brother Italy’ Galeazzo Binyami as Deputy Minister of Infrastructure – “I have apologized more than once” he said

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s appointment of a far-right lawmaker, who was photographed in 2005 wearing a swastika armband, is causing a backlash and has been condemned by the opposition.

Galeazzo Binyami, who was elected as a Member of Parliament on the ballot of Prime Minister Meloni’s post-fascist Brothers of Italy party, was appointed yesterday, Monday, Deputy Minister of Infrastructure.

This 47-year-old lawyer was photographed during a celebration in 2005 wearing a black shirt and a red swastika bracelet on his left arm.

His appointment is “an insult, an indignity to the Constitution, to memory, to History and to the victims of the swastika,” the Nazi emblem, Democratic Party lawmaker Marco Furfaro reacted on Twitter.

“Shame on you, Georgia Meloni,” he added.

Former Naples mayor Luigi de Magistris called the photo “disgusting”, while many took to Twitter to criticize Binyami’s appointment.

Binyami himself condemned in a statement “every form of totalitarianism, freedom-killing and anti-democratic expression”, characterizing Nazism as “absolute evil”.

The 2005 photo was taken “in a private context” and “I have apologized more than once,” he stressed.

Other ministerial appointments announced yesterday, Monday, were criticized by the left-wing opposition.

Claudio Durigon, appointed to the labor ministry, had proposed in 2021 to rename a park in Latina, south of Rome, which bears the names of murdered anti-mafia judges Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borcellino, after Arnaldo Mussolini, the dictator’s brother. The polemic that followed had led him to resign.

“When the past does not pass. Dark shadows in the choice of ministers” is today the title of the center-left newspaper La Repubblica.
