Boris Johnson at COP27 on climate in Egypt

Johnson described the previous COP, which his government hosted in Glasgow, Scotland last year, as a “success”.

Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced today that he will go to Egypt for COP27, as current Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is criticized for his decision not to attend the global climate summit.

“I was invited by the Egyptians,” Johnson told Skynews in his first interview since leaving Downing Street in early September. Johnson resigned in July after a series of scandals rocked him and the Conservative party, but remained in office until the election of Liz Truss, who was succeeded a month and a half later by Sunak.

Johnson described the previous COP, which his government hosted in Glasgow, Scotland last year, as a “success”.

“I know it’s not that fashionable to talk about (climate) but COP26 has allowed us to do a lot of good things for the planet,” he added, at a time when the Conservatives’ environmental policy is raising concerns in Britain.

Johnson’s comments also increase pressure on Sunak, who was criticized when he announced last week that he would not attend COP27, which begins on Sunday in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt. He cited “pressing” domestic issues he is dealing with to justify his absence, such as the budget presentation, on November 17. Earlier today, however, a representative said that his participation in the UN climate summit is “under review”.

King Charles will not be attending COP27 either but will host an environment reception at Buckingham Palace on Friday.
