Bennett goes to the United Arab Emirates on Israel’s prime minister’s first visit to the country

by

Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett arrived in Abu Dhabi this Sunday (12) for the first visit by a head of government from that country to the United Arab Emirates. Diplomatic relations between the two states were re-established in September 2020, with an agreement mediated by the US.

This Monday (13), the prime minister will meet the crown prince of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. They will talk about strengthening the bond between the two countries, according to a statement released by Bennett’s office.

The visit comes as negotiations between world powers and Iran resumed in Vienna, with the aim of saving the 2015 nuclear agreement, abandoned in 2018 by then-President Donald Trump.

The negotiations were criticized by Israel, which is calling for the application of concrete measures against Iran. The UAE, despite also seeing Iran as a threat, remains an important commercial partner of the country.

Earlier this month, Emirati national security adviser Tahnun bin Zayed visited Tehran on the first trip by a senior UAE official since relations strained over Iran’s split with Saudi Arabia in 2016.
