Poland steps up border security with Kaliningrad – 186km fence on border with Belarus

Fence on its border with Russia raises the Polandusing in the first phase a temporary wire mesh in the area adjacent to the Kaliningradsaid the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense Mariusz Blaszczak at a press conference he gave on Wednesday.

“Today, field engineers and soldiers from the Polish Armed Forces begin work on the construction of a temporary fence on the Polish-Russian border”he said, stressing that the dam will have height 2.5 meters and width 3 meters.

“The fence will consist of three rows of barbed wire used by armies around the world. There will be three layers,” explained the Polish Minister of Defense. “On the Polish side, there will be an enclosure for the protection of animals”he added.

As Blaszczak explained, Poland is taking this action after Russia’s aviation authority decided to start flights from the Middle East and North Africa to Kaliningrad, which Warsaw claims poses a threat of a migrant influx.

“I have decided to take measures that will strengthen security on Poland’s border with the Kaliningrad region,” Blaszczak said.

Strengthening Poland’s border with Belarus as well

Poland began construction of a new 186-kilometer border fence with Belarus in January due to the migration crisis on the Polish-Belarusian border. The dam is 5.5 meters high and is equipped with modern monitoring devices, including motion cameras and sensors.

In early October, reports emerged that Polish border guards had received emergency funds to build an electronic fence on the border with Russia’s Kaliningrad region. As Blaszczak explained, this work will be carried out together with the construction of the temporary barbed wire fence.

Poland has a 418 km border with Belarus and a 210 km land border with Russia.
