Erdogan: With President Putin we will give free grain to poor African countries

“Let’s help developing countries. The Russian president told me that we should deliver free grain to these countries, such as Djibouti, Somalia and Sudan,” Erdogan said.

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan promised today that Russia and Turkey will “deliver free” grain to African countries at risk of famine, following a similar announcement from Moscow on Saturday.

“Let’s help developing countries,” said the Turkish head of state. Russian President Vladimir “Putin told me that we should deliver free grain to these countries, such as Djibouti, Somalia and Sudan,” he added.

“We agreed on this issue and said we will discuss it more broadly during the G20,” the Group of 20 summit scheduled for mid-November in Indonesia, Erdogan continued.

Moscow had already declared on Saturday that it is ready to deliver 500,000 tons of grain to poor countries for free in the coming months and with the help of Turkey.

Grain exports from Ukrainian ports resumed yesterday, Thursday, after Russia returned to the grain deal signed at the end of July in Istanbul.

This agreement, which expires on November 19, has allowed the export of 10 million tons of grain and other agricultural products since August 1, easing the global food crisis caused by the war in Ukraine.
