The 178 Hirokazu Tanakas gathered in Japan beat the Guinness World Record, previously held by 164 women named Martha Stewart, who all met together in 2005.
A group of 178 people all named Hirokazu Tanaka gathered in Japan and broke the Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of people with the same first and last name.
The Hirokazu Tanaka Self-Name Association established in 1994 successfully broke the record in the Shibuya area of Tokyo. There were two previous attempts in 2011 when 71 people with the same surname were gathered and in 2017 when only 87 Hirokazu Tanakas were found.

Each member of the Hirokazu Tanaka Association, aged three to 80, was introduced during the event with a nickname based on their favorite food or hobby, including the likes of “Bubblegum” and “Triathlon.”
Hirokazu Tanaka, 53, known during the event as “Semi-Captain”, founded the Association after someone with the same name joined the Osaka baseball team, formerly Osaka Kintetsu Buffaloes now Orix Buffaloes, in 1994.
