It costs more to “visit” the supermarket for Belgians because of the increases recorded in the last year in many products.

A family of two spent 414 euros on their monthly shopping a year ago (October 2021), an amount that rose to 468 euros in September 2022 and 477 euros in October 2022, as reported by rtl.

Significant is the increase in products such as kitchen paper, in which the increase is 41.83% compared to last year, and in toilet paper, which records an increase of 41.38%.

The increase in the price of diapers for babies is smaller with 0.70%, while the price increase in butter is of the order of 37%.

However, a decrease of 4.89% is recorded in peanuts and 7.16% in apples.

In the rtl report, which visited a butter factory in Wallonia which has been in operation for 70 years, it is pointed out that the increase in the purchase price of fat leads to a large extent in the increased price of the final product. More specifically, the kilo used to cost 4.50 euros, in November 2021 it reached 6 euros and today the price reaches 7.50 euros per kilo.

Other factors that lead to the increase in the price of butter are the cost of packaging and transportation. Confectioneries, bakeries and other sectors in which butter is a key ingredient are therefore expected to be forced to adjust prices upwards. For year-end celebrations, a pastry shop is estimated to use 1,200 kg of butter in just 6 weeks.

“With the increase in the price of butter, we will certainly have to pass this increase on to the selling price. But we’re trying to go slowly because the consumer has to be able to follow,” says Henri de Ucorny, patisserie sales manager.
