Cyprus: ExxonMobil drilling rig ready in Limassol – Targets for plot 10

by

The American energy giant ExxonMobil is making the last preparations in view of the start of drilling in plot 10 of the Cyprus EEZ in the coming days.

The Stena Forth drilling rig is being anchored in the port of Limassol for days now, which is being prepared for confirmatory drilling in the Glafkos field, where the first drilling in 2019 showed a 5-8 tcf natural gas field. dual activity capable of drilling to depths of up to 10,000 feet (3048m).

The Stena Forth has several Stena Drilling upgrades, including a split dual fluid system, a transfer system to the drilling center for process development.

The Stena Forth drilling rig has been in the area for months. It previously operated for Chevron about 30 kilometers outside the southern Israeli port of Ashkelon associated with the four production fields at the depleted Mari B and Noa fields where production stopped in 2019.

Support boats

For the upcoming drilling on plot 10, the Demarest Tide support-supply vessel is also carrying out preparatory work, which is also located in the port of Limassol.

Another Stena Forth drilling rig is the Lundstrom Tideo, built in 2013 and sailing under the Vanuatu flag. The boat with the Cypriot flag EDT LEON also contributes to the preparations of Stenna Forth.

After the completion of the drilling in Glafkos, ExxonMobil and the partner of Qatar Petroleum will have the option to carry out a second “wildcat drilling” (wildcat drilling) on the same plot. “Wildcat drilling” is a form of high risk exploratory drilling. It is the process of drilling for oil or gas in areas that have not been proven or are fully exploited areas that either do not have specific historical production records or have been completely depleted as a site for oil and gas production. Updated sources told SigmaLive that so far there is no confirmation from Exxon Mobil for wildcat drilling and it is something that may become apparent along the way.
It is worth noting that according to mapped surveys carried out on plot 10 of the EEZ, apart from Glafkos, there are also two more “Zor type” limestone targets.
