London, Thanasis Gavos
A 59-year-old Briton believed to be the patient with the longest-lasting coronavirus infection without dying has completely cleared the virus after from 411 days.
The patient, who has not been named, had a weakened immune system after a kidney transplant. He was first diagnosed with COVID-19 on December 20, 2020.
Despite the fact that the symptoms gradually disappeared, the patient continued to be diagnosed positive for the disease until January 2022.
The announcement was made by the treating doctors at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital in central Londonwho reported that they know of no other recorded case of a patient who was finally cured after such a prolonged infection.
Doctors used genetic analysis of samples to confirm that the 59-year-old had been a carrier of the original strain of the coronavirus identified in China’s Wuhan province for so long and had not been reinfected by later stronger variants.
The patient was given the drug cocktail Regeneron.
The same medical team was also responsible for another carrier who remained positive for 505 days before finally being discharged.
