Norway announced today that it will provide Romania with 32 used F-16 fighter jets for 388 million euros.

The agreement, which was signed against the background of the war in Ukraine, which borders Romania, covers the supply of aircraft, spare parts as well as the maintenance and training of technical personnel.

Deliveries will take place in 2023 and 2024 after the aircraft are upgraded, the Norwegian ministry said.

“It will be an important contribution to strengthening the air force of a NATO ally and will simultaneously create value for the Norwegian defense industry by generating revenue for the Norwegian state,” Norwegian Defense Minister Bjorn Arild Gram said in a statement.

Norway had chosen in the 1960s the F-16 of the American General Dynamics and had ordered 60 monoplanes of this aircraft and 14 biplanes.

The last aircraft were retired at the beginning of the year in favor of the more modern F-35s of the US Lockheed Martin. Oslo plans to acquire up to 52 such aircraft.

For its part, Romania had expressed from 2021 its interest in buying Norwegian F-16s to replace the old Soviet-made MiG-21s.
