Ukraine: Russian-held dam at Nova Kakhovka destroyed by shelling

The official said it was an “attempt to create the conditions for a humanitarian disaster” by overflowing the dam.

The dam in the Russian-held region of Ukraine’s Nova Khakovka was destroyed by shelling by Ukrainian forces, Russian news agencies reported today, citing the emergency response service.

Russia’s state-run TASS news agency quoted an agency spokesman as saying a rocket fired from a US-made HIMARS missile system hit the dam’s water barrier, causing damage.

The official said it was an “attempt to create the conditions for a humanitarian disaster” by overflowing the dam.

There is no evidence to substantiate these claims, which could not be immediately ascertained by Reuters.

The huge Nova Kakovka dam, blocking the flow of the Dnieper River in Kherson, where Ukrainian forces are advancing, has taken on strategic importance in recent weeks.

Both Russia and Ukraine have repeatedly accused each other since October of planning to overflow the dam using explosives and intend to cause major destruction around the city of Kherson.
