Commission and EU countries conduct simulation of large-scale cyber attacks to boost preparedness

This year, the exercise is organized by the Lithuanian authorities with the support of ENISA in the framework of the European network of liaison organizations on cyber crises (EU-CyCLONE)

Senior cybersecurity representatives from EU Member States, the EU Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA) and the Commission are taking part in a two-day operational-level mapping exercise, called Blue OLEx 2022, to test crisis management procedures . In view of the upcoming implementation of the Network and Information Systems Directive (NIS2), the large-scale cybersecurity exercise helps improve joint coordination, situational awareness and decision-making, while promoting trust-building and information sharing, among others between the Member States and the Commission.

Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton said: “Recently, more than ever, we have seen malicious actors develop new strategies targeting our digital infrastructure and services, putting citizens and businesses at risk. Cyber attacks are everywhere, and it is our shared responsibility to work collectively to prepare and implement rapid response plans for emergencies, especially in the event of a large-scale cyber incident or crisis.”

After Blue OLEx 2021, this year the exercise is organized by the Lithuanian authorities with the support of ENISA in the framework of the European network of cyber crisis liaison organizations (EU-CyCLONE). EU-CyCLONE supports the coordinated management of large-scale cybersecurity incidents and crises and ensures regular information exchange between Member States and Union institutions and bodies. It contributes to the implementation of the European Commission’s strategic plan for rapid emergency response in the event of a large-scale cross-border cyber incident, enabling cooperation at technical and political level [για παράδειγμα μεταξύ των ομάδων αντιμετώπισης περιστατικών ασφάλειας υπολογιστών (CSIRT) και της ολοκληρωμένης πολιτικής αντιμετώπισης κρίσεων (IPCR)] in the event of a large-scale cross-border cyber crisis. More information on the exercise is available in the relevant ENISA press release and on the EU Cybersecurity Strategy here.
