Lula receives a call from Cristina Kirchner and leaders from Peru, Holland and Costa Rica

President-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) spoke by phone this Tuesday (8th) with five world leaders. Among them, the president of Peru, Pedro Castillo, and the vice president of Argentina, Cristina, Kirchner – both are protagonists of the new wave of the left in the governments of South America.

Castillo wrote on his Twitter account that he reiterated to Lula his “best wishes for his [de Lula] to strengthen democracy, the economy, social inclusion and sustainable development” of Brazil. He also said that the president-elect invited him to his inauguration in January.

Also this Tuesday, PT spoke with the president of Costa Rica, Rodrigo Chaves, the prime minister of the Netherlands, Mark Rutte, and the head of diplomacy of the European Union, Josep Borrell. The latter was one of the first world leaders to congratulate Lula on his victory, even on election Sunday.

Rutte, in turn, wrote on Twitter that Lula is an “ally in the fight against climate change, a partner for trade and investment, and a key player in the G20”, a group that brings together the 20 largest economies in the world.

Since he was elected, PT has received calls from more than ten world leaders. US and French Presidents Joe Biden and Emmanuel Macron, respectively, as well as German Prime Minister Olaf Scholz, for example, spoke with the Brazilian less than 24 hours after his election.

The speed is justified by the efforts of the global community to delegitimize any questioning of the election results by President Jair Bolsonaro (PL). Lula’s victory also means, especially for the European community, the possibility of reuniting weakened ties under the administration of the current Brazilian president.

In this sense, a symbolic phrase by Emmanuel Macron said to Lula will remain: “I can say that I was anxiously awaiting so that we could relaunch a strategic partnership worthy of our history and the challenges ahead.”
