Armenia and Azerbaijan have repeatedly clashed over control of the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh enclave.

The foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan have agreed, following talks in Washington, to speed up negotiations between their governments, the State Department announced today.

Armenia and Azerbaijan have repeatedly clashed over control of the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh enclave.

“The foreign ministers agreed to accelerate their negotiations,” State Department spokesman Ned Price said, referring to talks between Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and his Azeri counterpart Jeyhun Bairamov.

“The positive thing was that the two sides met, aired out many of their differences and were finally able to agree on a joint statement. They agreed to continue contacts, to engage in direct dialogue in the coming weeks,” the State Department spokesman said.

In September at least 286 people were killed in hostilities between the two countries. The US-brokered truce ended the worst clashes on the Armenia-Azerbaijani border since the 2020 war.
