Massachusetts and Maryland elect for the first time lesbian and black to government

The leadership of US state governments is expected to become more diverse starting next year.

The first results of the midterms, the midterm election held on Tuesday (8) to elect senators, representatives and governors, show that, for the first time, Massachusetts will have an openly lesbian woman in government, according to a projection of the news agency. Associated Press.

Democrat Maura Healey, 51, will also be the first woman elected to the state’s office – in 2001, Jane Swift arrived at the post after the incumbent resigned. The US could still elect another lesbian woman tonight if Democrat Tina Kotek wins the Oregon gubernatorial race.

Another state that elected a woman for the first time was Arkansas, where Republican Sarah Huckabee Sanders, a spokeswoman for the White House during the Trump administration, was victorious. The triumph carries symbolism, as she is the daughter of Mike Huckabee, who was governor of the same state for ten years.

In Maryland, Wes Moore will be the state’s first black governor and the third elected in the country’s history — the first being Douglas Wilder (1990-1994), in Virginia, and Deval Patrick (2007-2015), in Massachusetts. With a trajectory in the investment market, the Democrat, who is also a writer and television producer, will replace the popular Larry Hogan, also from the Democratic Party.

In Florida, Governor Ron DeSantis, now the biggest name in the Republican Party after Donald Trump, was reelected. Now he is consolidating his strength in the state, where, even as an almost unknown deputy, he won the previous elections just 0.4 percentage points ahead of his opponent.

On Tuesday, he defeated former Governor Charlie Crist, now in the Democratic Party, who ruled Florida from 2007 to 2011 for the Republican Party. DeSantis gained popularity at the expense of much controversy. The most recent of these was to lead to a paroxysm a movement of republicans against irregular migration. Last month, he chartered planes to send 48 immigrants to the luxurious and bucolic island of Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts — without them even knowing where they were going.

The re-elected governor also makes Florida an increasingly Republican stronghold. Once a swing state, the region has voted since 2000 mostly for DeSantis’s party.

The Senate race, which will define the future of the Biden administration, is still undecided. Although a series of results have already been announced, it is still not possible to know who will be elected in Pennsylvania, Georgia, Arizona and Nevada, states that must decide the future of the House.
