Armenia: Proposal for demilitarized zone ala… Korea in Nagorno Karabakh

by

The proposal comes as clashes have escalated in recent weeks on the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Armenia proposed today the creation of a demilitarized zone along its border with the Azerbaijan and around his area Nagorno Karabakhclaimed by the two Caucasus countries.

This proposal is made while Baku and the Yerevan they have stepped up talks in recent weeks to find a way out of the territorial conflict that has soured their relationship for three decades.

The two countries have fought two wars, the last of which, in 2020, caused at least 6,500 deaths. Clashes have occurred regularly since then, including in September when 286 militants were killed.

“I put on the table an initiative to create a demilitarized zone around Nagorno-Karabakh,” Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said during a cabinet meeting.

“We also propose (…) to create a three kilometer demilitarized zone along the Armenian-Azerbaijani border,” he added.

This proposal comes as clashes have multiplied in recent weeks on the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

The conflict is linked to territorial disputes, mainly around Nagorno-Karabakh, a mountainous region inhabited mainly by Armenians that seceded from Azerbaijan in the early 1990s with the help of Yerevan. A first war had then caused the death of at least 30,000 people.

In this context, the leaders and foreign ministers of the two countries have met several times in recent months for peace talks.

The Armenian Prime Minister stated today that the Russian President Vladimir Putinwhose country has deployed a “peacekeeping” force in Karabakh, will travel to Yerevan on November 22.

The Russian leader had met Pashinyan and Azeri President Ilham Aliyev during a summit in Russia in late October.

Westerners also organized several meetings between the two sides, in Brussels and Washington. Russia, which considers the Caucasus to be its own business, does not take kindly to these mediations.
