Chinese President Xi Jinping will meet, at the G20 summit in Bali, Indonesia, their counterparts from the US and France, Joe Biden and Emmanuel Macron respectively, as announced by the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The White House had already confirmed that Biden and Xi would meet on Monday on the sidelines of the G20 summit. It will be their first face-to-face meeting since Biden became president.

The G20 summit will take place from November 14 to 17 in Bali.

The Chinese leader, who last week met with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, will then travel to Thailand to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum meeting from November 17 to 19.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said during a regular press briefing on Friday that Xi will also meet his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron at the G20.

He will also meet Senegal’s Macky Sall and Argentina’s Alberto Fernandez.

The talks follow Xi Jinping’s re-election last month to a historic third term as the leader of the Chinese Communist Party, ensuring his re-election to the country’s presidency in March 2023.

Joe Biden and Xi Jinping have already spoken five times by phone or video link but this is their first face-to-face meeting since January 2021.

Xi and Biden are meeting with the goal of “responsibly managing” the rivalry between China and the US, White House spokeswoman Karin Jean-Pierre said in a statement.

Washington also hopes that the two countries will be able to “work together on issues where they have common interests,” the spokeswoman also said. In this context, Americans focus on the Climate, the fight against the drug trade and health.

Biden and Xi will discuss a range of “international and regional issues,” Karin Jean-Pierre said, without specifically mentioning Taiwan, the biggest source of tension.

Another issue of tension: Russia, as Biden would like China to distance itself from Moscow.

Also on the agenda: North Korea. As Pyongyang ramps up its missile launches, Washington would like Beijing to use its influence on North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Another source of tension: the U.S.’s recent tightening of export controls, which is seen as complicating China’s development of cutting-edge semiconductors and has drawn sharp criticism from Beijing.
