Yesterday’s unprecedented incident proved how professionally and harmoniously all public authorities cooperated, the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Kostas Karamanlis, emphasized from the floor of the Parliament, on the occasion of the management of information, regarding the existence of a suspicious person in one of the two flights of a well-known company departing from Athens International Airport.

This statement by Mr. Karamanlis was made in the context of a topical question debate with the SYRIZA member of parliament, Chr. Giannoulis regarding the “decision of the Commander of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) which stipulates that the President of the Security Committee will be the private manager of the airport and not a representative of the state Civil Aviation Service”.

As Mr. Karamanlis said, the questioning member of parliament is right about the essence of the case which concerns an incident that occurred at Kos airport on September 16, where there was information about the placement of an explosive device

. As he said, the threat assessment team met and unanimously decided that it was a medium-scale incident (yellow) and that the airport should be evacuated. It was a “legally unsound and unfortunate” reaction, because it has no jurisdiction. The responsibility lies with the ministry, said Mr. Karamanlis and added: “I called the commander of the APA, I explained it to him and the specific document he has produced, which is obviously incorrect, will be asked of him immediately, after the question and the answer that I give you, to withdraw it”.

For his part, Mr. Giannoulis emphasized the need to ensure that the most important parts of the operation of the airports cannot be absent from public presence, public control and public accountability, and “it is certainly not something that can be managed by the representatives of management bodies”, which often prioritize profit over safety.
