US-Russia meet in Cairo to renew nuclear deal

by

The State Department has announced that the two sides will meet soon and discuss resuming inspections under the treaty that were halted before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Russia and the United States will soon meet in Cairo for talks on the New START nuclear weapons treaty, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said today.

The State Department said Thursday that the two sides will meet soon and discuss resuming inspections under the treaty that were halted before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Ryabkov’s comments, carried by the RIA news agency, are the first confirmation that the talks will be held in Egypt. He said that they will take place in late November-early December.

New START, which came into force in 2011, puts a cap on the number of strategic nuclear warheads that the US and Russia can develop, and in the development of land- and submarine-launched missiles and bombers that can carry them.

Russia in August suspended cooperation with inspections under the treaty, blaming travel restrictions imposed by Washington and its allies on Moscow’s February invasion of Ukraine, but said it remained committed to complying with the terms of the agreement.
